Centre notifies Income-tax Act, 2025; to come into force from April 1, 2026

The Income-tax Act, 2025, has been formally notified by the government. President gave his assent on August 21, 2025. The Ministry of Law and Justice issued a gazette notification. The new law extends to the entire country. It will be effective from April 1, 2026. This Act replaces the Income-tax Act, 1961. Parliament passed the Act earlier this year.

The government has formally notified the Income-tax Act, 2025, a legislation aimed at consolidating and amending the country’s income tax laws. The Act received the President’s assent on August 21, 2025, according to a gazette notification issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice.

The new law will extend to the entire country and will come into effect from April 1, 2026, unless otherwise specified.

“This Act may be called the Income-tax Act, 2025,” the notification stated, marking a comprehensive overhaul of existing income tax provisions.

The Act, passed by both Houses of Parliament, replaces the current Income-tax Act, 1961, which has been in force for more than six decades.
